The New York Times reported this morning that the FDA approved ella, a 5-day post-sex emergency contraceptive long available in Europe, for use in the United States.
I love thinking about how they put together this research study:
In a head-to-head trial between the two drugs, women who took ella had a 1.8 percent chance of becoming pregnant, while women who took Plan B had a 2.6 percent chance. Experts tracked nearly 1,700 women who randomly received one of the two pills within three to five days of having unprotected sex.What, did they use Facebook ads? Considering the 5 day window this is a pretty quick recruitment turnaround. Or did they just recruit women who reported that the chances they would have unprotected sex in the next 6 months were good, and gave them ella to have on hand?
Either way, the drug should be out in the 4th quarter of this year, just in time for New Years.
